Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero is in talks with Inter Milan over a potential summer transfer. The Argentine defender, who helped his country reach a second consecutive World Cup final this month, could depart after five years at Spurs. The club finished 17th in the Premier League last season with 41 points, 10 wins, 11 draws, and 17 losses, scoring 48 goals and conceding 57 for a -9 goal difference, ending 44 points behind leaders Arsenal.
What happened?
Inter Milan’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, confirmed the club’s interest in Romero, telling Sky Italy: “It’s definitely a deal we are trying to sign with the player and the club. These things take some time but there’s definitely interest. Let’s see.” Romero’s representatives have been in Milan for discussions this weekend, with Tottenham open to selling the 25-year-old after strengthening their defensive options.
Why is Romero leaving?
Romero’s future at Tottenham has been uncertain following a challenging 2025-26 season. Despite serving four separate suspensions, he made 156 appearances since joining in 2021 and played a key role in Spurs’ Europa League triumph last year. However, with Jan Paul van Hecke signed for £52m and Marcos Senisi joining as a free agent, manager Roberto De Zerbi has additional defensive options, making Romero expendable.
What’s next for Tottenham?
With Romero potentially leaving, Tottenham will need to assess their defensive depth. Wilson Odobert remains sidelined, adding to the club’s injury concerns. The transfer window remains open, and Spurs may look to reinvest the funds from Romero’s sale to strengthen other areas of the squad.
