Tottenham Hotspur’s recent heavy investment in the transfer market has not prevented a disastrous start to the Premier League season. The club sits 20th in the table with just two points from five matches, a stark contrast to the record sums spent on squad rebuilding.
Analysis of the last five summer windows shows Spurs have recorded the highest gross and net transfer spend compared to rivals Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. This summer alone saw 13 senior player transactions, a level of squad turnover that was an outlier among the top clubs. Yet the immediate return has been negative, with the team falling 28 points down the table compared to the previous campaign.
A strategy under scrutiny
The club broke its transfer record twice, first to sign Mateus Fernandes for €99 million and then Sandro Tonali for €108 million. All ten of their summer signings came from clubs within the UK, with an average incoming age of 27.4. The activity was overseen by Director of Football Operations Rafi Moersen, formerly of City Football Group, who helped facilitate the deals.
Despite this significant outlay, the team’s performance has collapsed. After 13 transactions in the 2023/24 season, Spurs finished six points better off. The identical number of moves this past summer has been followed by a precipitous drop. The current standings make for grim reading, with Tottenham 13 points behind leaders Manchester City.
The current reality
The on-pitch results tell the story. The season began with a 5-1 Carabao Cup win over Charlton, but league form has been dire. A 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle was followed by goalless draws with Nottingham Forest and Everton. Consecutive losses to Liverpool and Aston Villa have cemented the bottom-place position.
In the most recent match, a 3-2 home loss to Villa, late goals from Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke provided only consolation. The team has scored just two league goals while conceding eight, leaving them with a goal difference of minus six. You can review the full list of recent results on our fixtures page.
With the international break providing a pause, attention turns to the next challenge. Tottenham travel to Old Trafford on October 10 to face a Manchester United side sitting 12th. The club will hope its expensively assembled squad can finally find some cohesion. The complete squad list shows the depth now available to the manager, who must find a winning formula quickly.
