Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has a selection headache in attack ahead of Monday's Premier League trip to Tottenham Hotspur. Teenage striker Sidiki Cherif is expected to keep his starting place despite the return from suspension of Taiwo Awoniyi.
Cherif, 19, announced himself with a goal and a penalty won on his top-flight debut in Coventry's 4-1 win over Newcastle United. He has one goal and an assist to his name already, providing a spark for a side that has won its last two league games. Lampard now must weigh whether to stick with the youngster or recall the more experienced Awoniyi, who joined from Nottingham Forest this season.
Awoniyi returns from ban
Awoniyi, 29, has completed a three-match ban following a red card in the 5-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on September 13. The Nigerian made six appearances for Coventry before his suspension, scoring once and providing one assist. "Taiwo has missed his three games, he's back in, we bought him for a reason," Lampard said. "I think he was doing pretty well before the red card and missing the games."
Ellis Simms also staked a claim by coming off the bench to score his first goal of the campaign against Newcastle. Lampard welcomed the competition. "Ellis as well is contributing, this is what it is there for," he said. "It's good competition in a critical area of the pitch."
The manager stressed the need for his forwards to deliver. "If you want to try and do well in this league or stay in this league and progress in this league, you have to be able to have strikers that can do the all-round striker job but also score your goals," Lampard said.
Potential system switch
Lampard deployed a four-man defence for the Newcastle victory but may revert to a 3-4-2-1 shape for the tougher away assignment in North London. In that system, Stephen Mfuni could replace Ephron Mason-Clark, with Milan van Ewijk and Jay Dasilva as wing-backs. Caleb Yirenkyi and Matt Grimes would likely form the midfield pivot, with Jack Rudoni and Brandon Thomas-Asante supporting the central striker.
Coventry travel without several injured players. Luke Woolfenden (knee), Aurele Amenda (calf), Josh Eccles (ankle), and Haji Wright (quad) all remain sidelined.
For Tottenham, the match represents a chance to build on a hard-fought point earned at Manchester United last weekend. Ange Postecoglou's side sit 19th in the standings with just three points from six games, their recent form reading DLLDD. They have scored only three league goals all season, conceding nine. Dominic Solanke's late equaliser at Old Trafford secured a 1-1 draw, a result they will hope sparks an upturn. The team has struggled to find the net, with their three goals coming from a total of 67 shots, a conversion rate of just 4.5%.
The fixture at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night pits the 19th-placed hosts against 14th-placed Coventry, who have collected 7 points from their opening six matches. Spurs' next match after this is another home game, with the full fixtures list showing a busy schedule ahead. Lampard's final team sheet, particularly the name leading the line, will be revealed an hour before the 8pm kick-off.
