Tottenham Hotspur finally secured their first Premier League win of the season, beating Coventry City 3-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night. The victory lifts Roberto De Zerbi's side from rock bottom to 16th in the table, level on six points with their opponents but ahead on goal difference.

James Maddison, making his first competitive start since May 2025, opened the scoring with a curling effort into the top corner after 14 minutes. Coventry equalised four minutes into the second half through Jack Rudoni, but Tottenham responded well. Omar Marmoush restored the lead with a fine strike into the far corner on 58 minutes for his first goal for the club, before Ben Davies sealed the points deep into stoppage time with a surprise effort from the edge of the box using the outside of his boot.

Long-awaited returns

The match was notable for significant returns. Dejan Kulusevski came off the bench in the 85th minute, ending a 526-day absence due to injury. His introduction was met with a huge roar from the home support. Maddison's influential performance was also a major positive, with his creativity from the number ten position proving decisive. "James Maddison was the star of the show and a big reason Spurs were able to secure the well-needed win," said Patrick Rowe. "His goal speaks for itself."

The win ends a concerning run of form. Before this match, Tottenham were the only Premier League side without a victory this season, having taken just three points from their opening six games. They had also dropped a league-high 30 points from winning positions at home since the start of the 2024/25 campaign, making the ability to see out this game particularly important for morale. The team had prepared with a warm-weather training camp in Marbella during the recent international break.

Looking ahead

The three points provide a key platform ahead of a demanding London derby. Tottenham travel to Stamford Bridge this Saturday to face Chelsea, who currently sit fourth in the standings. The corresponding fixture last season ended in a heavy defeat, adding extra incentive for De Zerbi's squad. With Kulusevski back in the fold and Maddison looking sharp, Spurs will hope to build on this momentum and climb further away from the relegation zone. Their next challenge is set for Saturday Night Football against Chelsea.
