Tottenham Hotspur has achieved major IT savings by overhauling its stadium's data infrastructure. The Premier League club cut its virtualization licensing fees by more than 85 percent after replacing VMware with Hewlett Packard Enterprise's Morpheus VM Essentials software.
Rob Pickering, the club's Chief Technology Officer, explained the rationale behind the significant change. He told The Register that the hypervisor had long been a mundane purchase. "For at least as long as my career in technology, hypervisor has been one of those very unsexy things that you bought from one person and you just sort of got on with it," Pickering said. He added that recent decisions by VMware, "a 400-pound gorilla in that space," ran counter to the interests of both system integrators and customers, prompting the search for an alternative.
The migration forms part of a broader redesign of the stadium's data center and network, which is nearly complete. The club's infrastructure at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is now underpinned by HPE's Morpheus VM Essentials and OpsRamp software, managed through the GreenLake platform. This new setup handles the stadium's server, storage, and networking needs.
The physical data center features six aisles powered by HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 server hardware and Alletra Storage MP. HPE announced that this combination allows the club to manage its complex, multi-site environment far more efficiently than before. While the club has not disclosed which specific VMware products were replaced or the exact previous costs paid to Broadcom, the 85 percent reduction in licensing fees represents a substantial operational saving.
These off-field efficiencies arrive as Tottenham seeks its first points of the 2026-27 Premier League season. After two games, the team sits 20th in the standings with zero points, having lost both matches. Their goal difference stands at minus five, with zero scored and five conceded, leaving them six points behind early leaders Manchester City.
The squad is also dealing with significant injury issues ahead of their next match. Key attacking players Richarlison, Wilson Odobert, Xavi Simons, James Maddison, and Sávio are all currently sidelined. This presents a challenge for manager Roberto De Zerbi as he prepares his team for an important away fixture.
Attention now turns to the pitch, where Tottenham will aim to kickstart their campaign. Their next opportunity comes quickly with an away trip to face Nottingham Forest on September 5th. Forest currently occupies 15th place in the table, making this a key early-season encounter for both sides. Fans can view the full schedule on the club's fixtures page.
The club's investment in a more cost-effective and agile IT backbone is designed to support all football operations, from matchday analytics to fan engagement. This technical overhaul, while happening behind the scenes, is a concrete step in simplify club resources. Tottenham Hotspur travels to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest this Saturday.
