Pre-Season Set-up
Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 3-0 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on 4 August. The loss came after a summer of reinforcements, including a £41 million signing of Mamadou Sangare from Lens, yet the result revealed deep-rooted issues in the squad’s composition and conditioning.
Youthful Line-up
De Zerbi fielded four players aged 21 or under: 19-year-old Mikey Moore, 20-year-old Lucas Bergvall, 21-year-old Mathys Tel and 20-year-old Archie Gray, who became the club’s youngest captain at 20 years 163 days. The reliance on such a young core was highlighted by the manager, who said, “We are not in the right point in physical condition for a lot of reasons.”
Fitness Concerns
The pre-season tour to New Zealand and Australia had left several key players with lingering injuries. Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Dominic Solanke and Mateus Fernandes all missed parts of the tour, and the flight itself was cited as a factor in their delayed return. De Zerbi noted that the squad’s physical readiness was “not right to work.”
Tonali’s Performance
Sandro Tonali, Tottenham’s £100 million record signing, was described by De Zerbi as “not in the best physical condition.” The Italian, who had not been involved in the World Cup, struggled to maintain the tempo set by Brentford, failed to win possession and did not impose himself on the midfield. De Zerbi added that Tonali’s lack of match fitness was surprising given his pre-season involvement.
Manager’s Assessment
The manager admitted that the youthfulness of the side had been exposed and that the defeat was “quite emphatic.” He said he would wait for transfer business to finish before setting a target for the new season. De Zerbi also criticised the timing of a teenage winger’s press in the first half, suggesting that experience is needed to handle the complexities of Premier League play. He hinted that the club should bring in more seasoned players to strengthen the squad.
The defeat also highlighted defensive frailties: Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi were out-manned by Brentford’s front three of Igor Thiago, Kevin Schade and Dango Outtara. Goalkeeper Toni Kinsky failed to command his area at set pieces, contributing to the second goal when a shot by Mathias Jensen was pushed down to Vitaly Janelt.
De Zerbi’s comments point to a rebuilding operation that will require time, experience and a focus on fitness. The club’s next steps will likely involve new signings to address the gaps exposed in the 3-0 loss to Brentford.
